• Vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies
• Travelers should also be up to date for measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT)
• Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.
• Travel warnings for: Malaria, Dengue, Filariasis, Cutaneous, leishmaniasis, Onchocerciasis, Trypanosomiasis, Schistosomiasis, Cryptosporidiosis.
• Malaria risk in Kruger National Park and areas below 2000 m. Also areas of the Mpumalanga Province, Northern Province (Limpopo), and northeastern Kwa- Zulu-Natal as far south as the Tugela River of South Africa.
• Chloroquine is NOT an effective antimalarial drug in South Africa.
• Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used and this should be discussed with your doctor.
• Dengue, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, Filariasis, Onchocerciasis (River blindness), and African trypanosomiasis are all carried by insects and travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellent with DEET (30%-50%).
• Schistosomiasis avoid swimming in fresh water.
• Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by bottled water.
