Madagascar

• Vaccinations:  Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies

• Travelers should also be up to date for Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DPT), Polio

 

• Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.

• Travel warnings for: Malaria, Dengue, Filariasis, Leishmaniasis, Onchocerciasis, Plague, Leptospirosis, Schistosomiasis, and Cryptosporidiosis.

Malaria risk in all areas of Madagascar.
• Chloroquine is NOT an effective antimalarial drug in Madagascar.
• Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used and this should be discussed with your doctor.

Dengue, Filariasis,Cutaneous leishmaniasis, Onchocerciasis (River blindness), Plague, are all carried by insects.  Travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellent with DEET (30%-50%).

 

Leptospirosis: avoid swimming in fresh water.

Schistosomiasis: avoid swimming in fresh water.

Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by drinking bottled water.
