• Vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies
• Travelers should also be up to date for Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DPT).
• Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.
• Travel warnings for: Malaria, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, Dengue, Schistosomiasis, Cryptosporidiosis.
• Malaria risk areas in Iraq in Basrah, Duhok, Erbil, Ninawa, Sulaimaninya and Ta’min provinces. No risk in Baghdad, Tikrit, and Ramadi.
• Chloroquine is NOT an effective antimalarial drug in Iraq.
• Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used and this should be discussed with your doctor.
• Dengue, Cutaneous leishmaniasis are carried by insects so travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellent with DEET (30%-50%).
• Schistosomiasis: avoid swimming in fresh water.
• Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by drinking bottled water.
