Gambia

• Vaccinations:  Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B,Typhoid, Rabies, Polio, Meningococcal, Yellow Fever.

• Travelers should also be up to date on  measles/mumps/rubella (MMR),  diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT), Polio.

• Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.

• Yellow fever vaccination certificate required prior to entry into Gambia.

• Travel warnings for: Malaria, Dengue, Filariasis, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, Onchocerciasis, Trypanosomiasis, Schistosomiasis, Cryptosporidiosis.

• Malaria risk in all areas of Gambia.

• Chloroquine is NOT an effective antimalarial drug in Gambia.

• Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used and this should be discussed with your doctor.

• Dengue, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, Filariasis, Onchocerciasis (River blindness), and African trypanosomiasis are all carried by insects and travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellent with DEET(30%-50%).

• Schistosomiasis avoid swimming in fresh water.

• Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by bottled water.
