Burundi
• Vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies, Polio, Yellow fever
• Travelers should be up to date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT), Polio.
• Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.
• Yellow fever vaccination certificate required prior to entry into Burundi.
• Travel warnings for: Malaria, Dengue, Filariasis, Leishmaniasis, Leptospirosis, Schistosomiasis, Cryptosporidiosis.
• Malaria in all areas of Burundi.
• Chloroquine is NOT an effective anti malarial drug in Burundi.
• Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used and this should be discussed with your doctor.
• Dengue, Filariasis,Cutaneous leishmaniasis are carried by insects and Travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellents with DEET (30%-50%).
• Leptospirosis: avoid swimming in fresh water
• Schistosomiasis avoid swimming in fresh water.
• Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by bottled water.
