Afghanistan

  • Vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B,Typhoid, Rabies, Polio
    • Travelers should be up to date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT)
    • Rabies vaccination if traveling to rural areas.
  • Travel warnings for: Malaria, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, filariasis, Dengue, Leptospirosis, Cryptosporidiosis.
    • Malaria risk in all areas below 2,000 m
      • Chloroquine is NOT an effective anti malarial drug in Afghanistan
      • Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine can be used but this should be discussed with your doctor
    • Dengue, Cutaneous leishmaniasis, filariasis are all carried by insects and travelers should avoid insect bites and use insect repellent with DEET (30%-50%)
    • Leptospirosis: avoid swimming in fresh water
    • Cryptosporidiosis risk can be prevented by bottled water.
