Dehydration

Dehydration is the symptom of decreased body fluid volume.

Dehydration is both the loss of water and the loss of sodium (salt).

Dehydration can result from:
· Loss of sodium from diarrhea, fever, sweating.
· water losses from decreased water intake, insensible water evaporating from the skin and urinating.

Dehydration treatment requires replacement of both water and sodium.
· the kidney is unable to hold onto free water without the addition of dietary sodium (salt).
