Chronic Fatigue risk in Teens with Mono

- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a condition often associated with Infectious Mononucleosis in teens.
Infectious Mononucleosis or  “Mono,” is common and over 90 percent of the adult population has evidence of previous infections with the Epstein-Barr Virus which causes Infectious Mononucleosis.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a disorder of debilitating fatigue without an obvious cause. According to a recent article published in the journal Pediatrics, Infectious mononucleosis may be a risk factor for development chronic fatigue syndrome in adolescents.

Investigators of the study showed that adolescents with recent Infectious Mononucleosis have a higher incidence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The study was a prospective observational study that included 301 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with documented Infectious Mononucleosis. Six months after coming down with Infectious Mononucleosis, 13 percent of the adolescents had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Four percent had a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 24 months after infection.

This study supports the idea that Infectious Mononucleosis (Mono) in adolescents is a risk factor of developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

These are interesting findings since Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is not fully understood by the medical community. Additional research is needed to identify this relationship between Epstein-Barr infection which may ultimately lead to an infection-based model for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and possibly a cure.
