Hyperventilation
• Hyperventilation is the symptom of excessive breathing leading to low blood levels of carbon dioxide.
• Hyperventilation can cause muscle spasms and paresthesias (tingling).
• Hyperventilation can be caused by:
· anxiety
· emphysema
· fever
· liver failure
· low oxygen
· low blood pH
· pregnancy (progesterone stimulates breathing)
· pain

• Agitation is the symptom of uneasiness, tension or irritability.
• Agitation and anxiety are related and can result from emotional or physical stressors.
• Agitation can be associated with medical conditions such as:
hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland producing excessive epinephrine/adrenaline)
delirium (acute confused state)
• Agitation can also result from alcohol or nicotine withdraw.
• Agitation can be a sign of psychiatric conditions such as mania or schizophrenia.

• Anxiety may be associated with stress.
• Anxiety may also be associated with physical complaints which include:
· upset stomach
· excessive sweating
· dry mouth
· difficulty concentrating
• Anxiety that persists may represent a psychiatric illness and should be evaluated by your doctor.
