Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is pain in the lower abdomen typically occurring during the first few days of the menstrual cycle.

Dysmenorrhea pain usually lasts two to three days and occurs along the mid-line of the lower abdomen, often described as cramping and radiating to the back or thighs.

Dysmenorrhea can be associated with diarrhea, flushing, headaches, and nausea.

Dysmenorrhea usually begins early in menarche (before age 20).

Dysmenorrhea can result from:
· changing hormone levels
· prostaglandins release from the uterine lining
· endometriosis (a dislocated piece of intrauterine lining)
· infections of the bladder, cervix or uterus
· intrauterine device (IUDs)
· uterine fibroids (benign muscle tumors in the uterus)

Dysmenorrhea that is new onset or worsens should be evaluated by your doctor.
