Dysmenorrhea
• Dysmenorrhea is pain in the lower abdomen typically occurring during the first few days of the menstrual
cycle.
• Dysmenorrhea pain usually lasts two to three days and occurs along the mid-line of the lower abdomen, often described as cramping and radiating to the back or thighs.
• Dysmenorrhea can be associated with diarrhea, flushing, headaches, and nausea.
• Dysmenorrhea usually begins early in menarche (before age 20).
• Dysmenorrhea can result from:
· changing hormone levels
· prostaglandins release from the uterine lining
· endometriosis (a dislocated piece of intrauterine lining)
· infections of the bladder, cervix or uterus
· intrauterine device (IUDs)
· uterine fibroids (benign muscle tumors in the uterus)
• Dysmenorrhea that is new onset or worsens should be evaluated by your doctor.
