Dysarthria

· Dysarthria is the symptom of the inability to speak clearly.

· Dysarthria does not affect the language area of the brain. The affected person understands language and is aware of their impairment of speech.

· Dysarthria can be caused by:
Amyloidosis (impairing the normal movement of the tongue)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Botulism (Botulin poisoning)
Brain tumor at the base of the brain
Diphtheria
Guillain-Barré syndrome
Hemorrhage around the brain
Huntington’s disease (degenerative nervous system disease)
Hypothyroidism (severe)
Multiple sclerosis
Myasthenia gravis
Parkinsonism
Poliomyelitis (polio)
Oral ulcers such as herpes or canker sores that can impair the normal movement of the tongue and cheeks
Stroke
Trauma to cranial nerve V or XII
Wilson’s disease

· Dysarthria should be evaluated by your doctor
