Diarrhea

Diarrhea is the symptom of more than three bowel movements per day.

Diarrhea is loose or liquid bowel movements.

Diarrhea lasting less than two weeks is likely due to an infection with a virus or bacteria.

Diarrhea can be caused by:
· medications such as antacids
· artificial sweeteners in food, soft drinks or chewing gum
· malabsorption syndromes (Celiac disease, short bowel syndrome)
· bacterial overgrowth
· pancreatic disease
· irritable bowel syndrome
· infection

Diarrhea that is worsening or lasting longer than two weeks should  be evaluated by your doctor.
