• Diarrhea is the symptom of more than three bowel movements per day.
• Diarrhea is loose or liquid bowel movements.
• Diarrhea lasting less than two weeks is likely due to an infection with a virus or bacteria.
• Diarrhea can be caused by:
· medications such as antacids
· artificial sweeteners in food, soft drinks or chewing gum
· malabsorption syndromes (Celiac disease, short bowel syndrome)
· bacterial overgrowth
· pancreatic disease
· irritable bowel syndrome
· infection
• Diarrhea that is worsening or lasting longer than two weeks should be evaluated by your doctor.
