Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis the symptom of a severe and excessive and potentially fatal allergic reaction.

Anaphylaxis usually starts rapidly after an exposure to the allergic agent (food, medication, insect bite).

Anaphylaxis typically starts with a rapidly progressing skin rash that may lead to swelling of the face and specifically the lips.  The tongue may swell leading to an obstruction of the airway.

Anaphylaxis may cause wheezing and upper airway stridor (the sound of an obstructing throat or trachea)

Anaphylaxis also may be associated with flushing, generalized itching, and generalized rash.

Anaphylaxis may cause a drop in blood pressure, shock and death.
