Abdominal hernia
• Abdominal wall hernia is a sign of a weakening of the abdominal wall through which abdominal contents
may protrude.
• Abdominal hernias are also called ventral hernias.
• Abdominal hernias can develop after abdominal surgery at the site of the surgery (incision).
• Abdominal hernias may develop from a slow deterioration of the abdominal muscles and the tendons (linea alba) holding them in place.
• Abdominal hernias are often noted with a linear protrusion above the belly button (umbilicus).
• Abdominal hernia can be repaired with surgery.
• Abdominal hernia usually do not cause symptoms.
• Abdominal hernia may improve with abdominal muscle exercises.
• Umbilical hernias are ventral hernias at the belly button.
