Abdominal hernia

Abdominal wall hernia is a sign of a weakening of the abdominal wall through which abdominal contents may protrude.

Abdominal hernias are also called ventral hernias.

Abdominal hernias can develop after abdominal surgery at the site of the surgery (incision).

Abdominal hernias may develop from a slow deterioration of the abdominal muscles and the tendons (linea alba) holding them in place.

Abdominal hernias are often noted with a linear protrusion above the belly button (umbilicus).

Abdominal hernia can be repaired with surgery.

Abdominal hernia usually do not cause symptoms.

Abdominal hernia may improve with abdominal muscle exercises.

Umbilical hernias are ventral hernias at the belly button.
