Low Vitamin D levels linked to asthma severity
-The severity of childhood asthma has been linked to Vitamin D deficiencies. This is according to a recent
study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
· The study included 616 children from Costa Rica with asthma and showed a clear relationship between low levels of Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) and signs of asthma.
The study used blood levels of antibodies and inflammatory cell (eosinophil) as indicators of asthma severity.
The study authors report, “In these children, lower vitamin D levels are associated with increased markers of allergy and asthma severity.”
There were some limitations to this study such as a consensus to what is a normal Vitamin D blood level and the fact that there was no a control group included in the study.
This is an interesting finding in that Vitamin D is the vitamin known for calcium metabolism and bone health and has not previously thought to be involved in asthma.
