Insomnia may lead to Diabetes

by medicues

- Insomnia may increase your risk of developing Diabetes. This is according to an article in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Researcher reported that inadequate amounts of sleep produced metabolic changes that can lead to diabetes.
Study authors analyzed 11 healthy men and women for a two week period in which their sleep was restricted to 5.5 hours from their usual 8.5 hours per night.
Sleep restriction leads to an increase in the stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. Sleep restriction also lead to reduced oral glucose tolerance and reduced insulin sensitivity, both indicators of the development of diabetes.

· This is an interesting and important study for us as it shows how the stress of insomnia can ultimately be a risk factor for diabetes and an additional benefit of a good night’s sleep!
