Anti-Aging Effects of Fish Oil

by medicues

· Omega 3 fish oil may slow the "biologic clock" of cells. This is according to a recent article published in the January 20, 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

· Researchers have found that higher blood levels of the omega 3 fish oils are associated with a slowing of the cellular time clock. Cells use the redundant DNA at the end of chromosomes as a biologic clock. Every time a cell divides, it loses some of this redundant DNA called a 'Telomere'. When the telomere runs out, the cell stops dividing and dies.

· Authors of this study showed that higher levels of omega 3 fish oils were associated with a decrease in the shortening of the... [Read More]

Multivitamins may make you live longer

by medicues

-Telomeres are the redundant end of a human cell's DNA and telomere length probably determines the longevity of a cell.  Every time a cell divides, the DNA loses some of the telomere.  As the telomere shortens over time, cells lose their ability to replicate and ultimately die.  Telomere length is therefore an indication of cellular age.

There is currently a lot of interest in finding ways to maintain telomeres as this may increase cellular longevity and possibly make people live longer.

Interestingly, a recent study showed that taking a multiple vitamin was associated with longer telomere length.  This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Investigators studied data from 586 women enrolled in an unrelated study called the... [Read More]

Where did Swine Flu Come From?

· In the study higher concentrations of the perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) were higher in woman who failed to become pregnant for 12 months or more.

The study included 1240 women and blood samples were taken during the first prenatal doctor's appointment.

Women with the highest concentration of perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) found in their blood samples were 2.34 times more likely not to be... [Read More]

Retin A Use Linked to Increase Risk of Death

by medicues

According to a recent report in the journal Archives of Dermatology, there was an association between use of the popular topical cream Retin A and higher risk of death. The report is based on a study from the Veterans Affairs Topical Tretinion Chemoprevention Trial Group.

The study was stopped after six months due to an observation that the group using the Retin A type cream had a higher risk of death than placebo.

The researchers are unclear of a possible mechanism between the topical Retin A and the higher death rate in the study participants.

The study participants had an average age of 71 years and there are obviously additional factors contributing to the death rate.

The researchers comment that there are many... [Read More]

Preventing Diabetes With Limited Exercise

by medicues

· In a recent research article by BMC Endocrine Disorders, authors concluded that intense but extremely short duration exercise can decrease the risk of developing diabetes.

· The researchers showed that as little as 3 minutes of intense exercise every other day over two weeks was associated with lower blood-glucose and insulin levels. Higher levels of blood-glucose and insulin levels are predictors of the development of diabetes.

The study followed 16 otherwise healthy young men, exercising for 30 second intervals on a stationary bicycle for a total of 4 to 6 minutes every other day. After two weeks of exercise, statistically significant... [Read More]

Dieting may improve your memory

by medicues

· In a recent study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 50 men on low calorie diets where shown to have improved memory. According to the study, participants who cut their calories by 30% had an improvement in their memory of about 20%.

· Bodily inflammation interferes with cell function and likely has a negative effect on the brain cells' ability to recall or make memories. However, cutting calories from carbohydrates (sugars) will lead to a decrease in inflammation as well as in insulin production.

· Many medical studies have concluded harmful affects of inflammation on cells and cell function.

· Inflammation can be measured by an easy blood test; the C reactive protein. Insulin excess can also be measured by a simple blood... [Read More]

The new HPV vaccine can prevent CERVICAL CANCER.

by medicues

The Human Papilloma Virus is one of the most common infections among those that are or have been sexually active.  Many of those infected are unaware and may pass it along unknowingly. Others may develop genital warts or even some forms of cancer.  There are over 100 strains of HPV and it is possible to be infected by one or multiple strains.  However, only a few of these have been definitively linked to a disease process. For example, HPV strain 6 and 11 are known to cause approximately 80 % of genital warts.  HPV 16 and 18 are associated with cervical cancer, which is the 2nd most common form of cancer in women worldwide.

The good news is that many of these HPV infections transmitted sexually clear on there own in about one or two years. It is the persistent infections that are... [Read More]

Health Benefits: Flaxseed Oil Vs. Fish Oil

by medicues

Flax seed oil, also known as linseed oil, is derived from the flax seed, which has become increasingly popular, because of its high concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid(ALA) also known as an omega-3. The name omega-3 describes the molecular structure of this unsaturated fatty acid. Alpha-linolenic acid is called an essential fat because it is essential for normal metabolism and cannot produced in your body and must be obtained through your diet. Flax seed oil has about six times the concentration of omega-3 fatty acids as most fish oils.

Fish oils from anchovies, herring, salmon and to a lesser extent tuna; contain two additional types of omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Omega-6 fatty acid, is also essential for normal human... [Read More]
